The Sheep River originates in the Rocky Mountains near the Highwood Range and flows eastward through Kananaskis Country, eventually joining the Highwood River near the town of Okotoks. Its clear, cold waters and proximity to Calgary make it a popular spot for both locals and visiting anglers.
Why Fish the Sheep River?
The river is known for its healthy trout populations and It’s a great spot for sight fishing, thanks to the clear water and shallow depths in many areas. It has your typical fish species found in mountain streams like Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat Trout and Bull Trout (Catch and Release only) along with Mountain Whitefish. You may even find some Browns in the lower reaches.
Key Features of the Sheep River:
The Sheep offers some very exquisite scenery. The upper river starts by dropping through canyons and cliffs, giving way to spectacular waterfalls and plunge pools. Once leaving the upper section, the river widens as it passes through its tree lined banks on its way to join the Highwood.
Outdoor Activities:
There are a wealth of outdoor activities offered in this area, ranging from countless hikes to camping and wildlife viewing. There are several campgrounds in the area including Sandy McNabb Campground.
Access:
Highway 546 follows the Sheep River through Sheep River Provincial Park, providing multiple access points to the upper reaches. There are also multiple trails and parks in and around Diamond Valley and Okotoks that provide access as well.
Fishing Tips for the Sheep River:
Expect the typical hatches of Stones, Mayflies, and Caddis. Nymphing these species can be especially productive all throughout the season. Streamer fishing can be productive as well, targeting the tail outs of the larger pools.
Regulations:
Be aware of Alberta’s fishing regulations, including special rules for Bull Trout, which are catch-and-release only.
There is year long closure on the section of river between the Indian Oils Days use area and the mouth of Gorge Creek.
