About the Red Deer River (Tailwater)

The Red Deer River

Flowing from Dickson Dam to the city of Red Deer, this tailwater section of the Red Deer River is one of Alberta’s most underrated yet rewarding fisheries. The consistent cold water released from the dam creates prime habitat for trout, making this stretch home to Brown Trout, Pike, Goldeye, and Walleye, and Mountain Whitefish.

Though not as famous as some of Alberta’s other trout rivers, the Red Deer River Tailwater offers unique opportunities—from casting dry flies to rising browns to stripping streamers for aggressive pike. The variety of fish, scenic banks, and relative solitude make this an exceptional stretch of river.

Why Fish the Red Deer River?

This tailwater provides an eclectic mix of angling opportunities, with Browns being the primary draw for fly anglers. However, pike, walleye, and goldeye add another layer of excitement, especially for those fishing streamers. Like many Brown Trout streams, it has its days and if you are lucky enough to get on it when there’s a hatch, look out!

Key Features of the Red Deer River

This stretch of the Red Deer River offers seclusion, technical trout fishing, and big predator potential. The trout here tend to be wary, so stealth and proper fly selection are key. Expect clearer water in spring and fall, with murkier flows in summer due to rainfall and dam drawdown. The fish per mile ratio isn’t nearly as high as other river like the Bow, but the quality can definitely equal its big brother to the South. It pays to be diligent with fly selections, especially during hatches as these trout can be overly picky somedays.

Wildlife is abundant—deer, moose, bald eagles, and even the occasional bear make appearances along the river.

Outdoor Activities:

This section of river can see a lot of action during the warmer months. It is popular with rafters, kayakers, canoes and jet boats so use caution while on the river.

Access:

There are various access points along this stretch starting at the Dam all the way down to the HWY 11 bridge, east of Red Deer. In the city? The river can be accessed almost its entire length through town by the walking paths and city parks.

Fishing Tips for the Red Deer River:

Go slow when on foot. Look for risers along the banks and try to spot fish holding tight to structure. If there is a hatch in progress, size up your fly one or two sizes and lengthen your leader. Consider heavier tippets as well. If you are drifting, work the entire pool from the head to the tailout. Pull over if you need to work the top sections again. Look for structure during the day and get as tight as possible. Streamers can get looks but the fish can /will be selective. Change patterns frequently until you get an eat instead of a drive by.

Regulations:

The Brown Trout and Walleye are catch and release through this section.
