About the South Ram River

Why Fish the South Ram River?

The South Ram River is one of Alberta’s most remote and breathtaking trout streams, offering crystal-clear waters, stunning canyons, and a true backcountry experience. Flowing through the Rocky Mountain foothills west of Rocky Mountain House, the South Ram is a classic freestone river home to West Slope Cutthroat Trout.

This river is ideal for anglers seeking adventure, as much of the South Ram requires hiking, horseback riding, or floating to access its best stretches. With pristine pools, deep runs, and rugged terrain, the South Ram offers a fishing experience far removed from crowds and easy access waters.

Key Features of the South Ram River:

The South Ram River is a true wilderness fishery, flowing through steep canyons, dense forests, and remote valleys. Its cold, oxygen-rich water provides a perfect habitat for aggressive cutthroat trout, which readily take dry flies.

Unlike many other Alberta rivers, the South Ram remains pristine and lightly pressured, making it an excellent choice for multi-day trips, remote camping, and backcountry exploration. However, its isolation also means anglers must be prepared for rugged conditions, strong currents, and wildlife encounters.

Outdoor Activities:

Beyond fly fishing, the South Ram River is a haven for backcountry adventurers. Popular activities include hiking, horseback riding, and camping, as well as wildlife photography and nature exploration. The surrounding area is home to moose, bears, mountain goats, and bald eagles, making every trip into this remote canyon a truly wild experience.

Access:

Accessing the South Ram River requires effort, as most sections are not road-accessible. The best access is found in the upper reaches, which can be accessed via Forestry Trunk Road (Highway 734) and various backcountry trails.

There are various resource roads now in the area that can get you closer but be aware, gates can be locked at anytime leaving you trapped.

If hiking into the canyon sections, be aware of changing weather that could cause flash floods or mud/rock slides.

Be aware that if you choose to float or paddle the section below the campground, you will encounter more waterfalls and other challenging obstacles. Best left for advanced paddlers.

Fishing Tips for the South Ram River:

The South Ram is one of Alberta’s best dry fly rivers, with West Slope Cutthroat Trout eagerly rising to hatches throughout the summer. Anglers should focus on pocket water, riffles, and undercut banks, using large attractor dry flies to draw aggressive strikes. The best patterns include Chubby Chernobyls, Stimulators, Elk Hair Caddis, and Parachute Adams.

The best fishing is typically from July through September, when water levels are stable and insect activity is high.
