About the Livingstone

The Livingstone River is one of Alberta’s premier freestone streams, flowing through the rugged foothills of the Rockies before joining the Oldman River. Known for its crystal-clear waters, scenic surroundings, and thriving trout populations, the Livingstone is a dream destination for fly anglers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Why Fish the Livingstone River?

The river is home to a healthy population of West Slope Cutthroat Trout, as well as Bull Trout, making it a fantastic catch-and-release fishery. The cutthroat here are eager risers, often willing to take dry flies throughout the season, while the elusive bull trout can be targeted with streamers in the deeper pools.

Key Features of the Livingstone River:

Expect breathtaking scenery, crystal-clear water, and solitude, especially on weekdays. The river flows through rugged terrain, so be prepared for some hiking if you want to explore the lesser-fished sections. Wildlife sightings, including elk, deer, and bears, are common, so proper precautions should be taken.

Outdoor Activities:

In addition to fishing, the Livingstone River is a hotspot for kayaking, rafting, and hiking and mountain biking.

Access:

There are multiple camping spots nearby, including random camping areas along the Forestry Trunk Road. For those looking for a cabin or lodge stay, accommodations can be found in the Crowsnest Pass area.

Fishing Tips for the Livingstone River:

Dry fly fishing is incredibly productive, especially in late summer when grasshoppers and stoneflies are active. For those targeting bull trout, swinging large streamers in deeper runs can yield aggressive strikes.

Regulations:

Be aware of Alberta’s fishing regulations, including special rules for Bull Trout, which are catch-and-release only.

Plan Your Adventure:

Spring Runoff can make fishing challenging, but the river becomes more accessible as flows stabilize. The area tends to be very popular in the summer as well so be prepared for some activity when in the area. This area can absolutely stunning in the fall as well.
