About The Highwood River

The Highwood River begins in the Rocky Mountains of Kananaskis Country and winds eastward through rolling foothills before joining the Bow River past the town of High River. Known for its breathtaking scenery and productive fishing, the Highwood is a destination that appeals to anglers of all skill levels.

Why Fish the Highwood River?

The Highwood is home to a diverse range of fish species, including Bull Trout (catch-and-release only), Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, and Mountain Whitefish. Renowned for its thriving Trout population—featuring some of the largest specimens in the province—the river’s dynamic structure of riffles, deep pools, and runs provides the perfect setting for a variety of angling techniques. Its pristine environment, coupled with its convenient proximity to Calgary, makes the Highwood River a beloved destination for both local and visiting anglers.

Key Features of the Highwood River:

The Highwood River can be divided into three distinct sections, each offering unique fishing opportunities. The Upper Highwood, located west of Longview, is a remote and rugged stretch with crystal-clear, cold waters that are ideal for targeting Bull Trout and Cutthroat Trout. Access to this section is primarily via the Forestry Trunk Road/HWY541 or nearby hiking trails. The Middle Highwood, running from Longview to High River, features a mix of fast-moving water and deeper pools, with convenient access from Highway 22. This section is known for its healthy populations of Rainbow and Brown Trout. Finally, the Lower Highwood, near the town of High River, is wider and slower-moving, making it more accessible and suitable for novice anglers. Here, you can expect to find Rainbow Trout and Mountain Whitefish in abundance.

Outdoor Activities:

In addition to fishing, the Highwood River is a hotspot for kayaking, rafting, and hiking and mountain biking. There are multiple campgrounds available in the upper sections that are a perfect base camp for any outing.

Access:

The Highwood is easily accessible from Highway 22 and Highway 541, west of Long View. The town of High River can provide access to the lower reaches.

Fishing Tips for the Highwood River:

During the warm summer months, the Highwood River comes alive with hatches of Stoneflies, Mayflies, and Caddisflies, offering prime opportunities for dry fly fishing. Early mornings and evenings often feature the activity of Pale Morning Duns (PMDs) and Pale Evening Duns (PEDs), adding to the excitement. Terrestrial patterns like hoppers and beetles are reliable go-to options throughout much of the season. As summer progresses and the trout become more cautious, using lighter tippets can help improve your chances of success.
